I have been trying to ignore this story seeing all the other issues that the Yankees have had to deal with this off season. Then I got my coffee and read one of my favorite blogs this morning and decided that this might become an issue. When asked about being the full time DH this year, this is what Jorge had to say.
“I can’t complain. I always like to catch, I’m used to catching, but if they want me to DH to help out the team, you have to do that,” Posada said initially. “It is what it is. I look forward to everything I do. I try to help out the team, and if that’s going to help out the team and that’s what they want, I’m OK with it.”
Still, he later added that he expects to see some action behind the plate at some point in 2011.
“I’ll catch. I’ll catch. I’ll catch this year,” Posada said. "I’ll DH and then they’re going to want me to catch one of those days. I’m keeping an open mind. I would love to catch. I’m training like I always do, and if I have to catch, I’ll catch.”
Now, this may seem like nothing and if you didn't really follow Posada throughout his career, well you really wouldn't pay attention to any of it. Although, if you know him like most of us do and you realize how hot headed and stubborn he can be...well, you get a little worried, Imagine a scenario where Russel Martin does what we all expect him to do, hit .200 through April and May while Jesus Montero is swinging at everything short of a bag of peanuts from the stands and missing it all. Now there is an obvious hole in the line up and Jorge is having a fine start of the season batting a solid .280 with his usual power stroke. Then the chirping starts "why not let Jorgie catch and get a bat to fill the DH?" Then, the never under spoken Jorge starts replying "my knee feels great, I could catch every day if they needed me too?!" And the firestorm starts.
Now maybe I'm blowing this out of proportion and going a bit out of bounds here but if any of you remember the last contract negotiations between the brass and Posada camp, you know things can get ugly fast here. Any time you have a highly paid aging star who is on his way out and a young gun trying to replace him, you can count on one thing. Jorge is not going out that door quietly. This may end up being nothing and I could end up looking like and idiot here but like the Black Eyed Peas have so eloquently proclaimed "I gotta feeling"
